The Aerospace Industry has been faced with the problem of obtaining preimpregnated, uncured fibrous materials having a consistency which provides the required handling characteristics, degree of advancement in the polymerization as a result of “B” staging, and reliable, practical, testing techniques. The inconsistencies contribute to the high costs and schedule impacts related to composite structures. The standard industry tests (i.e., resin content, flow, volatiles, and gel time) have not provided a solution to the problem. The introduction of Gel Permeation Chromatography holds promise of a system which will resolve the problems. Initial research indicates that a relationship between the molecular weight distribution and workability characteristics exists and is measurable. Continued development of this system will result in an industry-wide method of testing and controlling these materials. In addition, this work will be the basis for more definitive specifications and testing methods.
