Using computer models as a predictive tool for bumper development is common practice in industry today. Finite element models are developed very early in the design process to evaluate dynamic performance with respect to federal, IIHS, and OEM specific requirements. This methodology has significantly reduced the time required to design and evaluate a bumper system. However, this methodology still often requires iterative steps in order to reach a suitable design. In particular, design variables such as the beam cross-section, beam curvature, material selection, and material thickness all have an effect on the performance of the bumper system. These variables create a large design space, which must be searched in order to find an appropriate design. A parametric model has been created in order to quickly evaluate these design variables and reduce the design space before a finite element model is built, thus lowering the overall time needed to find a solution.
