Laser Powder Deposition Repair of Knife Edge (Labyrinth) Seals on Navy and Army Jet Engines

Laser powder deposition has been used to repair both Navy surface and subsurface assets and Army ground vehicles. Repair of aviation assets for the Army has yet to occur. A non critical safety item used in Army aviation was repaired using laser powder deposition. After repair the part was subjected to heat treatment and machining to return the part to blueprint dimensions. Subsequent analysis indicated that the repaired area had been restored to its original metallurgical prosperities and dimensions. The part was considered successfully repaired and is awaiting airworthiness testing.
