Over time U.S. and European aviation authorities have developed independent regulations for certification of aviation products. With the formation of the European Joint Aviation Authorities (JAA) a need was identified for development of a single European set of regulations that would be harmonized for equivalency with U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations. A program to harmonize gas turbine engine certification regulations was initiated in 1989 with reasonable progress to date. Each turbine engine certification rule must accommodate the unique design and operational requirements of a wide range of engine sizes and types, sometimes necessitating differing provisions for rotorcraft engines. The process and status of FAA and JAA engine rule harmonization plus rotorcraft application specific requirements are described herein.
