Development of an Ideal Air Model and Test Data for the Holtzman Engine

- The Holtzman engine is a new stratified-charge internal combustion engine. It consists of a compression cylinder and an expansion cylinder working in cooperation. The two cylinders are connected by an open passageway through which air flows and into which fuel is injected. The intake and compression functions are accomplished by the piston motion in the compression cylinder, and the expansion and exhaust functions are accomplished by the piston motion in the expansion cylinder. While one piston is in motion, the other is nearly stationary: this refinement allows the passageway to remain open. A stratified-charge prototype engine has been built and tested. This paper provides some test data, and describes an ideal air model for the engine. The ideal air model is doubly important for the Holtzman engine because it describes ideal efficiency, as well as predicting the flow of air between the cylinders, and optimal heat addition.
