The paper discusses the significance of dynamic overshoot factors (DOF's) and its application in test and analysis of rotary wing aircraft crashworthy seating systems at BAE Systems Phoenix (formerly Simula Inc.). Information presented in this paper is specific to BAE Systems at the Phoenix location, and is referred to as BAE Systems or BAE for future reference. Principal sections of this paper include: a discussion of theoretical DOF applied to structural analysis, a combined systems approach to DOF with linear and nonlinear considerations, an overview of BAE dynamic test setup and requirements, and application of DOF to structural analysis. Valuable additional content includes the importance and benefit of applied dynamic overshoot factors (DOF's), challenges associated with designing/analyzing lightweight crashworthy rotary wing aircraft seating systems, and a discussion of the differences in assumptions and misconceptions with applied DOF. BAE Systems' applied definition of DOF is given, along with test data and definition of dynamic overshoot in application to crashworthy seat design.
