Authors Abstract
Content
Debilitating leg injuries are a common outcome of motorcycle accidents, yet debate over the potential benefits and hazards of providing “leg protection space” on motorcycles continues. Detailed reconstruction of motorcycle accidents reveals actual collision performance of contemporary crashbars and motorcyclist leg injury mechanisms. Nine hundred motorcycle accident in-depth investigation cases were reviewed and a detailed analysis of the crashbar equipped motorcycles was performed. Crashbar design, collision performance and the relation to leg injuries were determined. Results are used to evaluate actual collision performance of contemporary crashbars and examine counter-measures for motorcyclist leg injuries.
