Bell 429 Handling Qualities and AFCS Flight Test Results and Pilot Evaluations

This paper will present the handling qualities design characteristics of the new Bell 429 helicopter. Design features of the helicopter, both exterior design and features inside the cockpit will be introduced. The SCAS and autopilot systems are described in detail. Handling qualities certification flight testing is discussed, and samples of measured flight test data are presented. The handling qualities characteristics which are discussed in detail include the static longitudinal stability, static lateral directional stability, dynamic stability, controllability during simulated engine failures, and SCAS actuator hardovers. The safety aspects of the dual AFCS and dual hydraulic systems are described, and the fact that the entire VFR certification was demonstrated SCAS off. Pilot qualitative evaluations are provided by four of the many test pilots who have flown the new aircraft.
