The Analog Approach to Aerial Weapon Systems Analysis

A specific system analysis technique (the analog approach) especially suitable for evaluating the dynamic man-machine perfomance of a future armed helicopter is reviewed. The scope of the concept, the procedural approach, and the iterative process necessary in its application are presented. A recent study, "The Effectiveness Comparison of the AH-56A/AH-1G/OV-10A," is used as the basis for explaining the application of the general technique to a real world problem. In particular, the AH-1G portion of the study is reviewed to illustrate the practical aspects of technique application. This includes both a discussion of the detail elements that collectively comprise the model, the capabilities and limitations of hardware interface between the flight crew and the dynamic model as well as the presentation of typical data developed by the model.
