The Propulsion and Space Research Center (PSRC) is part of the Technology Innovation Institute (TII), a UAE-based research center that aims to lead global advances in artificial intelligence, autonomous robotics, quantum computing, cryptography and quantum communications, directed energy, secure communication, smart devices, advanced materials and propulsion and space technologies. PSRC has established a priority to research hybrid-electric propulsion technology for the electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) segment of the Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) market segment. PSRC is aggressively building a qualified team of experienced hybrid electric research scientists from around the world to accelerate development of these disruptive technologies. Most eVTOL aircraft designs leverage distributed propulsion architectures to transport people and goods more quickly and quietly than traditional helicopters while retaining vertical takeoff and landing capabilities to access urban areas. These architectures are enabled by hybrid-electric propulsion technology that has not yet been matured by the industry. PSRC seeks to advance the state of the art for architectural integration, lightweight energy storage, high voltage power distribution, lightweight motors and generators, noise suppression, and aerodynamics of electric ducted fans to enable maturation of these hybrid-electric architectures.
