Scope
This SAE Recommended Practice provides standardized laboratory tests, test methods, and requirements applicable to many of the lighting devices and components covered by SAE Recommended Practices and Standards and is intended for reference for devices used on vehicles less than 2032 mm in width, regardless of length, or 7620 mm in length regardless of width. Tests for vehicles larger than 2032 mm in overall width are covered in J2139.
Rationale
Revision for photometric measurement and scan
It has been the intent that signal lamp luminous intensity measurements in the required angular domain maintains a good continuity with no visible dark streaks or points. This will ensure the signal lamps' visibility for drivers and pedestrians. The intent of the current requirement has not been clearly stated in this document. The revision is to clarity the measurement and scan requirement to ensure adequate beam pattern continuity for a lamp.
Revision for addition of forward lighting environmental tests to this document
During the SAE Lighting Committee meetings held in Santa Fe, NM in spring 2006, an agreement was reached that all tests, including tests only required for forward lighting devices, should be specified and required in this document as much as possible. In this revision, these tests include Impact Test, Chemical Resistance Test, Abrasion Test, Thermal Cycle Test, Internal Heat Test, and Corrosion Resistance Test that are specified and required in SAE J1383. The information transferred from SAE J1383 is not changed except for editorial format for this document. This is to make this document more centralized with all lighting related tests and will be more user friendly for individuals using this document for lamp design and testing.

* Redlines comparisons are available for those standards listed in the Revision History that contain a radio button. A redline comparison of the current version against a revision is accomplished by selecting the radio button next to the standard and then selecting 'compare'. At this time, Redline versions only exist for some AMS standards. SAE will continue to add redline versioning with ongoing updates to SAE MOBILUS.
