Measurement of Aerodynamic Performance for Mass-Produced Cars and Light-Duty Trucks
- Ground Vehicle Standard
- J2881_201006
- Issued
Scope
Rationale
-
1
It documents the aerodynamic performance along with the associated vehicle set-up and full-scale wind tunnel conditions employed for the measurement.
-
2
It defines a process to make appropriate corrections to the wind tunnel results depending on the specific wind tunnel used.
-
3
It ensures uniformity and transparency by making the test results publicly available for use by customers, researchers, and media who may have an interest in the vehicle’s documented aerodynamic performance.

Road Vehicle Aerodynamics Forum Committee
The Road Vehicle Aerodynamics Forum Committee (RVAC) reports to the Vehicle Engineering Systems Group of the Motor Vehicle Council. The Committee is responsible for developing and maintaining SAE Standards, Technical Papers, and Special Publications related to road vehicle aerodynamics and wind noise performance and test techniques. The Wind Noise Measurement Standards Subcommittee has been developed under the RVAC scope to provide an international forum for industry and academia to encourage the exchange of ideas and progress relating to automotive wind noise, encompassing occupant perception of wind noise, experimental methods and facilities, numerical simulation, and other methods of wind noise prediction and optimization. Participants in the SAE Road Vehicle Aerodynamics Forum Committee include OEMs, suppliers, consulting firms, government, and other interested parties.
