Scope
This Recommended Practice covers air braked trucks, truck-tractors, trailers and buses. It enumerates the identification and installation of the air brake components not covered in other SAE recommended practices and standards.
Rationale
Brakes operate as a system requiring that all components and connections must be properly coupled to assure appropriate operation. It is necessary to standardize to avoid confusion on the part of installation and service personnel. This recommended practice defines the means to identify various brake system components including valves, actuators, connectors, tubing, and hose to maximize the potential for properly connecting components to assure proper brake system operation.
Specific identification may be covered in other recommended practices and standards related to specific components. It is not intended that this recommended practice supplant any of these existing RP’s and standards but to be utilized in conjunction with them.
This one recommended practice does not and cannot cover all potential situations especially due to the multitude of systems and combinations. This is more evident with the advent of electronically controlled brakes. But, it does address certain common components of truck, truck-tractor, bus and trailer systems and provides a point of reference to try to assure system integrity. As with all documents, further refinement may be required, as new systems and issues become apparent.

Truck and Bus Brake Systems Committee
The Truck and Bus Brake Systems Committee of the Truck and Bus Brake and Stability Control Steering Committee is responsible for developing, reviewing, and approving recommended practices, standards, and information reports related to brake systems of trucks, tractor-trailer combinations and buses over 10,000 lbs (4500 Kg) GVWR designed primarily for highway use.

* Redlines comparisons are available for those standards
listed in the Revision History that contain a radio button. A
redline comparison of the current version against a revision is
accomplished by selecting the radio button next to the standard and
then selecting 'compare'. At this time, Redline versions only exist
for some AMS standards. SAE will continue to add redline versioning
with ongoing updates to SAE MOBILUS.
