Scope
This SAE Part Standard covers selected metric screws, hex bolts, and nuts manufactured in accordance with American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and SAE fastener standards. This document covers fastener materials often used in ship systems and equipment but its use may be applied wherever fasteners of the covered materials are used. This document permits the fasteners to be identified and ordered by a part or identifying number (PIN) as defined in this document.
Rationale
Part Standard SAE J2295 that originally covered both inch and metric fasteners has been split into two documents with J2295 covering inch dimensioned fasteners and this standard, J2295M, covering metric dimensioned fasteners. An optional J2295 prefix has been added to the Part Identifying Numbers (PIN’s) in order to more clearly identify this standard as the source of the PIN. This revision adds Copper Allot 260, Nickel Alloys 625 and 686 and titanium alloy 32 (UNS R55111) for the ASTM F 467 and F 468 fasteners while making titanium alloy 19 inactive for new design. For inspection of small lots, the references specifying lot size have been changed.
The reference specifications for dry film lubricants and for electroplating have changed. Hot-dipped and mechanically deposited zinc coatings have been deleted and Zinc/Aluminum) coatings have been added. Guidance has been added to the Note Section regarding the availability and interchangeability of several copper alloys. Additional configurations of slotted and jam nuts have been added. A note on galling is added to provide guidance when selecting aluminum, titanium, nickel alloys and austenitic stainless steel fasteners. Stainless steel alloys have been updated to agree with those listed in referenced product standards. The tables identifying material suffixes for the part identification numbers have been made user friendly by:
-
a
Identifying the applicable ASME dimensional standard in the table
-
b
Providing strength information to help the designer select an appropriate fastener. (Strength values are for info only and do not supersede requirements of the referenced product standard).
-
c
Identifying the coatings recommended for each fastener

* Redlines comparisons are available for those standards
listed in the Revision History that contain a radio button. A
redline comparison of the current version against a revision is
accomplished by selecting the radio button next to the standard and
then selecting 'compare'. At this time, Redline versions only exist
for some AMS standards. SAE will continue to add redline versioning
with ongoing updates to SAE MOBILUS.
