This SAE Recommended Practice is intended as a guide in the usage of mechanical face seals for the passenger car air-conditioning compressor application. Included in this guide is a compilation of present practices; for example, a description of various type seals, material combinations, design data, tolerances, drawing format, qualification testing, inspection information and quality control data. The terminology used is recommended to promote uniformity in seal nomenclature.
The Powertrain Steering Committee of the Motor Vehicle Council (MVC): evaluates the current status, prioritizes and plans future work of the group's committees. serves as the decision making body on all standards related issues to assure relevance to the industry and scope of the committee. acts as a liaison between the MVC and the group's committees as well as the Powertrain systems portion of the automotive industry and SAE. Participants in the SAE Powertrain Systems Group include OEMs, suppliers, consulting firms, government, and other interested parties.

Wild Cards
Using the asterisk, ( * ) allows you to search for a partial word. For example, entering a keyword search of aero* will search for any word beginning with aero.
Using the question mark, ( ? ) allows you to search for a word with a single character wildcard. For example, searching for t?re would match both tire and tyre
Using Quotes
Words in double quotes " " are treated as a phrase. Conducting a search for "heat model" will return all results in which the exact phrase "heat model" is found, while "heat modeling" would NOT be included.
A term combined with a phrase will be joined with an OR operator.
Searching for Standards
When searching for a standard please use the entire Document Number assigned, which includes the abbreviation. A space can be used, or omitted between the abbreviation and number.
