Scope
This SAE Recommended Practice describes the basic content requirements, bar-code specifications, and functional test specifications of a vehicle emission configuration (VEC) label. On the vehicle, the VEC label is to be mounted under the hood in a readily accessible location for use of a bar-code scanning device.
This document specifies a permanent vehicle emission configuration label that can be automatically identified through a bar-coded format.

"The Vehicle and Engine Emissions Standards Committee reports to the Powertrain Systems Group of the Motor Vehicle Council. The Committee is responsible for developing and maintaining SAE Standards, Recommended Practices, and Information Reports related to the test processes and measurement of regulated vehicle and engine tailpipe emissions as defined by EPA and CARB. The focus of this committee will be on those topics complementary to existing Federal and State regulatory procedures, rather than those that supplant them."
