Scope
This SAE Recommended Practice was prepared to provide engineers, designers, and manufacturers of motor vehicles with a set of minimum performance standards which covers the next level of performance properties above those of the present SAE J1703 brake fluid standard. These fluids are not intended for use under arctic conditions or in braking systems requiring the use of mineral oil based hydraulic fluid.
These fluids are designed for use in braking systems fitted with rubber cups and seals made from natural rubber (NR), styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), or a terpolymer of ethylene, propylene, and a diene (EPDM). These fluids are not designed to operate in a pumped or a clutch braking system, especially those hydraulic systems requiring a mineral oil based fluid.

Brake Fluids Standards Committee
The scope of the Brake Fluids Standards Committee is to develop and maintain relevant standards; recommended practices and information reports related to non-petroleum based brake fluids covering: The requirements of fluids for use in the hydraulic brake systems of motor vehicles; the handling, dispensing, and packaging of such fluids; service maintenance using such fluids. These documents are reviewed on a regular basis to ensure that they reflect the changing needs and requirements of the industry.

* Redlines comparisons are available for those standards
listed in the Revision History that contain a radio button. A
redline comparison of the current version against a revision is
accomplished by selecting the radio button next to the standard and
then selecting 'compare'. At this time, Redline versions only exist
for some AMS standards. SAE will continue to add redline versioning
with ongoing updates to SAE MOBILUS.
