Scope
This SAE Aerospace Standard (AS) establishes minimum performance standards for new equipment anticollision light systems.
This Aerospace Standard defines minimum light intensity in terms of "effective intensity" as defined in paragraph 3.5 of this standard and specified vertical and horizontal directions about the longitudinal and vertical axis of the airplane. It will also define flash rate and color for the anticollision light system. It is not intended that this standard require the use of any particular light source such as Xenon, LED or any other specific design of lamp.
Rationale
This document establishes minimum performance levels for aircraft anticollision light systems including chromaticity and light intensity in support of TSO and system certifications. Information contained herein has been expanded from AS8017C in the areas of measurement orientation, color specifications, qualification criteria and added figures for clarity. Further information has also been added regarding the use of Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology in the areas of effective intensity, flash frequency and continued airworthiness.

Issuing Committee
A-20B Exterior Lighting Committee
The purpose of the A-20 Aircraft Lighting Committee is to provide a forum for the development of aerospace standards in aircraft lighting that will fulfill the needs and requirements of operation control and utility. The scope includes both interior and exterior lighting. A list of the technical reports developed by the A-20 Committee can be obtained by searching on 'aircraft lighting' and selecting 'standards', from the SAE Home Page. A-20 Standards

* Redlines comparisons are available for those standards
listed in the Revision History that contain a radio button. A
redline comparison of the current version against a revision is
accomplished by selecting the radio button next to the standard and
then selecting 'compare'. At this time, Redline versions only exist
for some AMS standards. SAE will continue to add redline versioning
with ongoing updates to SAE MOBILUS.
