In response to pressure from government organizations in the U.S. and Europe to reduce even further the already low hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide, and oxides of nitrogen emissions from light-duty vehicles, vehicle manufacturers and their suppliers are developing and evaluating novel ways to achieve these challenging emission standards. This publication covers numerous concepts and strategies for improving the performance of catalytic converter systems. Contents include: EHC design options and performance; bypass hydrocarbon absorber system for ULEV; in-line hydrocarbon absorber for ULEV; butting monoliths in catalytic converters; optimization of the packing design for manifold catalytic converter application; new approach for ambient pollution reduction - PremAir catalyst systems; and durability of three-way catalysts with precious metals loaded on different location.
