Five papers comprise the seventeenth annual lecture on engine design sponsored by the Milwaukee section of SAE. The first paper outlines changes in carburetion technology designed to reduce emissions while maintaining performance. The next paper is a state- of-the-art description of hydraulic valve lifters. The third paper is devoted to the design and development of the American Motors V-8. This is followed by a report on the stress-strain testing of nonmetallic gaskets. The final paper is a description of engine lubricant developments and specifications, lubricant additives, and field testing for mixed fleets.
