Scope
This standard specifies a procedure for approximating the volume of materials contained in the grapple of bucket linkage operated grapples mounted to excavators. The volume ratings are based on the inside dimensions of the grapple and representataive volumes extending beyond the grapple.
The method employs the technique of dividing the complex shape of the material in the grapple into simple geometric forms to allow volume calculations of different grapple configurations.
The rating method is intended to provide a consistent means of comparing grapple capacities. It is not intended to define actual capacities that might be observed in any specific application.

Issuing Committee
MTC SC5 is responsible for standards related to hydraulic excavators, as defined by ISO 6165. A hydraulic excavator is a self-propelled machine on crawlers, wheels, or legs, having an upper structure normally capable of a 360-degree swing with mounted equipment (primarily for excavating with a bucket) without moving the undercarriage during the work cycle.

* Redlines comparisons are available for those standards
listed in the Revision History that contain a radio button. A
redline comparison of the current version against a revision is
accomplished by selecting the radio button next to the standard and
then selecting 'compare'. At this time, Redline versions only exist
for some AMS standards. SAE will continue to add redline versioning
with ongoing updates to SAE MOBILUS.
