This SAE Standard provides requirements, test procedures, and installation guidelines for clearance, sidemarker, and identification lamps intended for use on vehicles 2032 mm or more in overall width. Sidemarker lamps conforming to the requirements of this document may also be used on vehicles less than 2032 mm in overall width.
Rationale
Canadian and UN documents listed. Entire document copyedited for grammar, clarity, and up-to-date language. Added Figure 3 for white photometric requirements. Title adjusted.
§ 2.2: Added SAE J2040 & J2261. Added UN publications. Updated title and their respective availability of FMCSA publication. Added Canadian publications. Added TTMA publication.
§ 3: Separated light function definitions from lamp/device definitions in accordance with recent practice in other SAE Standards. Added "end-outline marker lamp" designation as an alternative term for clearance lamp. Copyedited for clarity.
§ 3.6: Stipulated that identification lamps are to appear substantially identical to one another in their group of three: to formalize a longstanding industry practice, in recognition of the ID lamps' unique required aspect of being a group of three devices, and to weigh against temptation to misuse identification lamps as style/fashion toys.
§ 5.1 and 6.1: Copyedited for clarity.
§ 6.2: White added as an optional color for front clearance and front identification lamps, for alignment with international practice and for consistency in North American practice (with note that as of this document's publication date, F/CMVSS № 108 require yellow for these functions).
§ 6.4: Copyedited for clarity. Added 6.4.1 and 6.4.3.1 stipulating operational modes for multifunction lamps.
6.4.3.1: Added term "optically".
§ 6.4.8: Updated with language that applies to all light sources, rather than just to filament bulbs with indexed bases.
§ 6.5: Copyedited for clarity.
§ 6.5.2: Correction made for metric conversion error; The corrected value of 38.1 cm is equivalent to the former 15 inch (English unit) requirement.
§ 7.1: Copyedited for clarity and to remove ambiguity. Added 7.1.2, noting special installation guidelines for emergency and special-service vehicles.
The Heavy-Duty Lighting Standards Committee is part of the Lighting Systems Group under the leadership of the Lighting Systems Steering Committee that reports to the Motor Vehicle Council (MVC). The Committee is responsible for developing and maintaining SAE Standards, Recommended Practices, and Information Reports related to lamps, reflective devices and associated safety equipment for multipurpose passenger vehicles, trucks, trailers and buses of 2032 mm or more in overall width. Heavy-duty lighting technical standards developed by this committee are essentially patterned after the corresponding lighting device standards for vehicles less than 2032 mm in overall width, but with unique environmental and physical attributes of the Heavy duty trucking market in mind. Participants in the SAE Heavy-Duty Lighting Standards Committee include OEMs, suppliers, consulting firms, government, and other interested parties.
* Redlines comparisons are available for those standards
listed in the Revision History that contain a radio button. A
redline comparison of the current version against a revision is
accomplished by selecting the radio button next to the standard and
then selecting 'compare'. At this time, Redline versions only exist
for some AMS standards. SAE will continue to add redline versioning
with ongoing updates to SAE MOBILUS.

SAE MOBILUS® Search Tips
Please note: All terms not contained within quotes, will be evaluated using the OR operator. This means that your search results will contain all results that contain ANY of the entered terms.
AND, OR, NOT
SAE MOBILUS supports the use of the AND, OR and NOT BOOLEAN operators ONLY function with the Advanced Search.
Wild Cards
Using the asterisk, ( * ) allows you to search for a partial word. For example, entering a keyword search of aero* will search for any word beginning with aero.
Using the question mark, ( ? ) allows you to search for a word with a single character wildcard. For example, searching for t?re would match both tire and tyre
Using Quotes
Words in double quotes " " are treated as a phrase. Conducting a search for "heat model" will return all results in which the exact phrase "heat model" is found, while "heat modeling" would NOT be included.
A term combined with a phrase will be joined with an OR operator.
