This SAE Recommended Practice applies to functions of motor vehicle signaling and marking lighting devices which use light emitting diodes (LEDs) as light sources. This report provides test methods, requirements, and guidelines applicable to the special characteristics of LED lighting devices. This Recommended Practice is in addition to those required for devices designed with incandescent light sources. This report is intended to be a guide to standard practice and is subject to change to reflect additional experience and technical advances.
Rationale
The 2015 revision of SAE J1889 expedited production testing, yet allowed previous methods when appropriate. The purpose of the 2019 update is twofold:
1
To allow industry to take advantages of new technologies, such as camera-based photometry (SAE J3100). This requires a better definition of photometric stability.
2
To allow shorter warm up times, when appropriate, by use of pre-determining minimum ratio. This could facilitate more frequent production quality checks.
Additional concerns are addressed related to minimum photometric values not being measured at 30 minutes per the 1999 version of SAE J1889 and the use of that version by Transport Canada when conducting compliance audit testing of LED lighting devices, as indicated in their Road Safety Bulletin published August 2004. Changes to this version will reference 30 minute photometric values by direct measurement or by a ratio method from a pre-determine ratio value.
The Signaling and Marking Devices Standards Committee is part of the Lighting Systems Steering Committee that reports to the Motor Vehicle Council (MVC). The Committee is responsible for developing and maintaining SAE Standards, Recommended Practices, and Information Reports related to exterior lighting devices used on passenger cars, light trucks, vans and multipurpose vehicles. The Committee monitors the development of related technologies and determines how they may be applied to signaling and marking devices, while also working towards the development of standards to aid in the application of various technologies. The following task forces have been developed under the committee's scope: J1889 LED Signal Lighting Task Force New Technology Signal Lighting Task Force J2030 Discharge Signal Lighting Task Force Geometric Visibility Task Force Miniature Bulb Task Force J593 Backup Lamp (Reversing Lamp) Task Force J2087 Daytime Running Lamp Task Force Side Mirror Turn Signal Task Force Participants in the SAE Signaling and Marking Devices Standards Committee include OEMs, suppliers, consulting firms, government, and other interested parties.
* Redlines comparisons are available for those standards
listed in the Revision History that contain a radio button. A
redline comparison of the current version against a revision is
accomplished by selecting the radio button next to the standard and
then selecting 'compare'. At this time, Redline versions only exist
for some AMS standards. SAE will continue to add redline versioning
with ongoing updates to SAE MOBILUS.

Search Tips: Search Operators:AND, OR, NOT; Wild Cards; Using Quotes
SAE MOBILUS® Search Tips
Please note: All terms not contained within quotes, will be evaluated using the OR operator. This means that your search results will contain all results that contain ANY of the entered terms.
AND, OR, NOT
SAE MOBILUS supports the use of the AND, OR and NOT BOOLEAN operators ONLY function with the Advanced Search.
Wild Cards
Using the asterisk, ( * ) allows you to search for a partial word. For example, entering a keyword search of aero* will search for any word beginning with aero.
Using the question mark, ( ? ) allows you to search for a word with a single character wildcard. For example, searching for t?re would match both tire and tyre
Using Quotes
Words in double quotes " " are treated as a phrase. Conducting a search for "heat model" will return all results in which the exact phrase "heat model" is found, while "heat modeling" would NOT be included.
A term combined with a phrase will be joined with an OR operator.
Searching for Standards
When searching for a standard please use the entire Document Number assigned, which includes the abbreviation. A space can be used, or omitted between the abbreviation and number.
