This SAE Information Report defines consistent terminology for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). The list of defined terms is followed by a list of acronyms. Certain criteria were used in selecting terms for this document. Terms in widespread use in the ITS community covering significant services, technologies and applications were chosen. This document focuses on terms used in the United States, although it covers aspects of worldwide ITS deployment. This document focuses on automotive applications, which include interfaces to and from the automobile. Later version may include a wider scope.
ITS includes a wide array of services, applications, and technologies. The Department of Transportation ITS National program Plan divides ITS into 29 User Services, which are included in this glossary. The User Services range from pre-Trip Travel Planning to Fully Automated Highway Systems. Other organizations and experts have divided ITS into a smaller set of more general application types types, such as Traveller Information or Advanced public Transportation. This document, in keeping with the general purose of SAE, focuses primarily on services, applications, and technologies in or on a vehicle. The field of ITS includes applications, such as communications between traffic management centers, which do not directly interface with the vehicle and therefore are not included in this document.

In the interests of keeping the document current, specific project names were not included. (Descriptions of FHWA projects are published annually by the FHWA, and are available from that agency.) The overall goal of this document is to provide the reader with basic information on terms relevant to ITS, including relevant technologies, standards, organizations, applications, and acronyms. Definitions are listed alphabetically in Section 3, followed by acronyms in Section 4.
The role of the Motor Vehicle Council (MVC) is to serve industry, consumers, government, and the public by providing Technical Reports (Standards, Recommended Practices, and Information Reports) that will contribute to the improvement of the overall performance, convenience, and safety of passenger car and light truck transportation and assist in the development of vehicles, systems, and components. It is also the role of the MVC to strategically guide the development of such Technical Reports. It is not the purpose of the Council to regulate the manufacture or use of passenger cars and light trucks, and no specifications are to be promulgated which are arbitrary or more restrictive than necessary to achieve the above purposes. No specifications should deter the manufacture or use of adequate products, although specifications may differentiate products with different levels of performance, convenience, and safety. Implementation of any Technical Reports issued by the MVC is voluntary. Enforcement is not the intent of any SAE body. The SAE MVC, through its Committees, will actively attempt to harmonize its Technical Reports with standards of other agencies throughout the world. However, in these attempts, technical accuracy and SAE policies should be followed.

SAE MOBILUS supports the use of the AND, OR and NOT BOOLEAN operators ONLY function with the Advanced Search.
Wild Cards
Using the asterisk, ( * ) allows you to search for a partial word. For example, entering a keyword search of aero* will search for any word beginning with aero.
Using the question mark, ( ? ) allows you to search for a word with a single character wildcard. For example, searching for t?re would match both tire and tyre
Using Quotes
Words in double quotes " " are treated as a phrase. Conducting a search for "heat model" will return all results in which the exact phrase "heat model" is found, while "heat modeling" would NOT be included.
A term combined with a phrase will be joined with an OR operator.
Searching for Standards
When searching for a standard please use the entire Document Number assigned, which includes the abbreviation. A space can be used, or omitted between the abbreviation and number.
