In order to compare test results obtained from different crash test facilities, standardized coordinate systems need to be defined for crash test dummies, vehicle structures, and laboratory fixtures. In addition, recorded polarities for various transducer outputs need to be defined relative to positive directions of the appropriate coordinate systems. This SAE Information Report describes the standardized sign convention and recorded output polarities for various transducers used in crash testing.
Rationale
The committee performed the recommended Five-Year Review of this Information Report and determined that a number of changes were necessary. The major changes are outlined below.
Removed all references to BioSID.
Replaced Figures 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, and 10 with updated artwork.
Added Angular Rate Sensor (ARS) and relevant ARS information and added ARS Figure 8.
Added Table 2 for THOR-50M dummy manipulations for recorded sensor polarities.
The Safety Test Instrumentation Standards Committee is responsible for providing performance recommendations regarding electronic and photographic instrumentation. These recommendations are primarily reported in the document SAE J211. The goal is to achieve uniformity in instrumentation practice and in reporting test results so that there can be a basis for meaningful comparisons of test results from different sources. Specific recommendations are made for dummies used in impact testing. The committee also publishes information reports when requested, such as SAE J1733 (Sign Convention for Vehicle Crash Testing) and SAE J1727 (Injury Calculations Guidlines). Documents are continually being revised and updated. Current subcommittees are: Transducer Equivalency - Currently completing its task of specifying performance requirements for specific types of transducers. Digital Imgaing - Working on revisions to J211/2 to include performance requirements for digital imaging (video) equipment used in data recording. Sign Convention - Updating J1733 with the latest sign conventions for specific dummy load cells.
* Redlines comparisons are available for those standards
listed in the Revision History that contain a radio button. A
redline comparison of the current version against a revision is
accomplished by selecting the radio button next to the standard and
then selecting 'compare'. At this time, Redline versions only exist
for some AMS standards. SAE will continue to add redline versioning
with ongoing updates to SAE MOBILUS.

Search Tips: Search Operators:AND, OR, NOT; Wild Cards; Using Quotes
SAE MOBILUS® Search Tips
Please note: All terms not contained within quotes, will be evaluated using the OR operator. This means that your search results will contain all results that contain ANY of the entered terms.
AND, OR, NOT
SAE MOBILUS supports the use of the AND, OR and NOT BOOLEAN operators ONLY function with the Advanced Search.
Wild Cards
Using the asterisk, ( * ) allows you to search for a partial word. For example, entering a keyword search of aero* will search for any word beginning with aero.
Using the question mark, ( ? ) allows you to search for a word with a single character wildcard. For example, searching for t?re would match both tire and tyre
Using Quotes
Words in double quotes " " are treated as a phrase. Conducting a search for "heat model" will return all results in which the exact phrase "heat model" is found, while "heat modeling" would NOT be included.
A term combined with a phrase will be joined with an OR operator.
Searching for Standards
When searching for a standard please use the entire Document Number assigned, which includes the abbreviation. A space can be used, or omitted between the abbreviation and number.
