Scope
This SAE Recommended Practice establishes a rating scale for subjective evaluation of vehicle ride and handling. The scale is applicable for the evaluation of specific vehicle ride and handling properties, for specified maneuvers, road characteristics and driving conditions, on proving ground and public roads. The validity of the evaluation is restricted to the individual ride and handling disciplines defined by these maneuvers and to the particular combination of conditions of the vehicle (e.g., equipment, degree of maintenance) and of the environment (e.g., road, weather).
This rating scale may not be suitable for some applications, such as specific types of ride or handling qualities, driver populations and market segments, or for correlating with objective measures. Appendix A - Other Scales discusses rating scales that better suit such applications.
This document is intended as a guide toward standard practice and is subject to change to keep pace with experience and technical advances.
Rationale
The title and scope of this SAE Recommended Practice are expanded to cover ride as well as handling. In Figure 1, the “Disturbance” rating adjectives are added to relate to most ride performance issues while the “Control” adjectives relate mainly to handling and are carried over from the previous version. The “Desirable”, “Undesirable” and “Borderline” zones in Figure 1 are also carried over from the April 2007 version of this standard. The “Disturbance” adjectives are from Figure 1 of SAE J2384 (except the 1 and 10 rating adjectives are changed from “Painful” and “None” to “Unacceptable” and “Imperceptible” because this Recommended Practice is for perception versus expectation rather than the absolute basis of J2384). The Purpose, Introduction and References sections and Appendix A are new in this version.

Vehicle Dynamics Standards Committee
The Vehicle Dynamics Standards Committee (VDSC) reports to the Vehicle Performance Steering Committee. The VDSC develops Information Reports, Recommended Practices and Standards related to the dynamics of passenger cars and light trucks, excluding trailers. The committee establishes tests and analyses that contribute to the understanding of the ride and handling performance of the total vehicle as a dynamic system.

* Redlines comparisons are available for those standards
listed in the Revision History that contain a radio button. A
redline comparison of the current version against a revision is
accomplished by selecting the radio button next to the standard and
then selecting 'compare'. At this time, Redline versions only exist
for some AMS standards. SAE will continue to add redline versioning
with ongoing updates to SAE MOBILUS.
