Tire Forensic and Accident Reconstruction

This course introduces basic tire mechanics, including tire construction components based on application type, required sidewall stamping in accordance with DoT/ECE regulations, tread patterns, regulatory and research testing on quality, tire inspections and basic tire failure identification. The course will provide you with information that you can use immediately on-the-job and apply to your own vehicle. This course is practical in nature and supplemented with samples and hands-on activities. It also provides a detailed description of tire marks and its characteristics in order to investigate accident reconstruction, tire failure modes, their potential causes, identification, and the sometimes-subtle nuances that go along with determination of tire failure. In addition, proper inspection techniques of tires will be discussed, and samples will be available to reinforce the concepts learned.

What Will You Learn

By completing this seminar, you will be able to:
  • Recognize all tire classifications and functionality
  • Identify differences between radial and bias tires
  • Differentiate tire type and application based on tread pattern
  • Distinguish sidewall stamping and tire grading requirements
  • Contrast tire cord path and tire shear stress
  • Indicate tire rolling resistance contributing factors
  • Identify tire dynamic forces
  • Understand tire slip and rolling resistance
  • Tire marks, characteristics and their role in Accident reconstruction
  • Interpret tire testing methods and equipment
  • Differentiate common tire failure modes and root cause
  • Explain the methodologies of good tire inspection
  • Describe tire failure causes
  • Identify and determine root causes of tire failure

Is This Course For You

This course is extremely helpful for accident reconstructionists, law enforcement and those with a thirst for knowledge on tires. The materials are basic in nature and not intended for individuals with substantial tire knowledge and is not intended to teach tire design. This course provides a basic understanding for tire sales representatives, tire technicians, tire customer claim service representatives, tire production manager and tire application technicians who should be able to choose the right tire construction and pattern for the right application and critical quality parameters.
