Scope
This SAE Aerospace Information Report (AIR) discusses past and present approaches for monitoring the landing gear structure and shock absorber (servicing), opportunities for corrosion detection, methods for transient overload detection, techniques for measuring the forces seen by the landing gear structure, and methods for determining the fatigue state of the landing gear structure. Landing gear tire condition and tire pressure monitoring are detailed in ARP6225, AIR4830, and ARP6137, respectively. Aircraft Brake Temperature Monitoring Systems (BTMS) are detailed in AS1145.
Rationale
This report provides engineering reference data, historical information, and educational material useful to the technical community regarding Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) systems for landing gear. The report is being updated to ensure the latest information on SHM technology is available to the technical community. This document will require periodic review in order to stay up to date with latest developments in SHM technologies.

Issuing Committee
A-5 Aerospace Landing Gear Systems Committee
The A-5 Committee addresses all facets of aerospace landing gears: design, maintenance and in-service experience. It publishes Aerospace Information Reports (AIR), Aerospace Recommended Practices (ARP) and Aerospace Standards (AS) for use throughout the industry. These documents provide current design information, recommended design practices and design standards for landing gear systems. A-5 also provides a forum for presentations on current technology and technical interchanges needed by each engineer to stay abreast of a fast moving field.
A-5 is comprised of three subcommittees: Wheels & Brakes (A-5A), Landing Gear, Struts and Couplings (A-5B) and Tires (A-5C). A-5 is an assemblage of top landing gear engineers from throughout the industry and the world including customers and commercial users. The committees form and modify the various specifications and standards for both military and commercial applications. Benefits from committee participation are knowledge, customer responses and first-hand input into tomorrow's specifications.Reference
