Prediction of Contact Pressure of Disc Brake Pad

This paper presents the prediction of contact pressure distribution of disc brake pad under operating condition. It is important to make contact pressure uniform in order for friction material to wear uniformly. There is no experimental method available for the direct measurement of operating contact pressure distribution in brake. Nonlinear finite element analysis was performed to predict the contact pressure distribution of disc brake pad. Measured and calculated deformation of the caliper under operating condition were compared to ensure accuracy of presented method. It was confirmed that the presented method is accurate enough for contact pressure prediction. While several design variations were evaluated, it was confirmed that offset piston arrangement and low friction shim are able to improve the pressure distribution.
