The Use of Axial Flow Turbines for Driving Centrifugal Compressors

This paper describes the design of compact constant-pressure turbines for small mass flow rates and high speeds, as demonstrated by two examples. Turbines of this type may be used in many applications as an alternative to high-speed electric motors and are very suitable for driving centrifugal compressors due to the high speeds attainable. They may be energized, e.g., by compressed air or steam. In particular, turbines of this type may be used to drive turbochargers in vehicles by exploiting exhaust gas heat.
