Environmental Impacts of Commercial Vehicles Drive Trains
Published June 05, 1997 by Verlag Des Verein Deutscher Ingenieure GmbH in Germany
In the light of more stringent environmental requirements, it has to be determined what limits the diesel engine is capable of complying with and under what conditions there is scope for deployment of alternative drives. From the environmental standpoint as well as in other respects, the development potential of the diesel engine has not yet been fully exploited. In the short term, natural gas engines are well placed to meet demands for minimal emissions. Amongst alternative drives in which the internal combustion engine is replaced by an electrical engine and the electrical energy is supplied by an electrochemical storage or a fuel cell it is not clear, at least in the medium term, in what direction development will proceed. For niche applications under restrictive conditions and without claim to economic competitiveness, suitable solutions are already available today.
