Abstract
A great deal of advances have been obtained by introducing computers in the field of internal combustion engines. Special efforts have been made in using computers for monitoring and diagnosing diesel engines. The main scope of the present work is to give the results obtained by the application of an engine diagnosis method developed by the authors on a medium-speed marine diesel engine. The method is based on a detailed simulation model of the engine and on measurements taken using a fast data acquisition system. The results obtained reveal the condition and deliver suggestions for repairs and optimum tuning. The use of this method on propulsion marine engines (large and medium scale ones) is of great importance since their sizes do not allow the use of trial-error methods. Further trials can be conducted using the engine simulation model, to predict the performance of the engine when various operating conditions are changed.
