Abstract
Hybrid electric vehicles provide the opportunity to greatly reduce fuel consumption, switch to non-petroleum based alternative fuels, provide large reductions in urban air pollution, and provide large reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. This paper presents the technological opportunities of these vehicle types, and the mission and goals of the U S Department of Energy's Hybrid Propulsion Systems Development Program.
