A Method for Optimal Design of Valve Gears

On the basis of models describing the main tribological phenomena occurring at the contact surfaces of cam and follower, a research is presented aiming to apply optimization theories to the design of valve gears for i.c. engines. The designer is provided with a method that allows to take into account at the same time many objectives, such as minimization of wear, correct dynamic behavior at high engine speeds, minimization of some geometrical dimensions of the mechanism. Given as input data a set of numerical values referring to objectives, a search procedure is performed to find an output parameter set (geometrical dimensions and other physical parameters) representing the solution to the problem. Application examples show that by an accurate design, significant improvements can be obtained with respect to present technical solutions based on less structured optimization procedures.
