Abstract
This paper concerns an innovative way to provide electric transportation. The roadway, itself, provides the propulsive force to pull the vehicle along eliminating the need for an engine, transmission, battery, motor, or other drive mechanism. The roadway only works on command, and may be used safely by non-equipped cars. The author first worked on such a system at the General Electric Engineering Laboratories where it was used to propel a round in an electromagnetic cannon. Recent progress in Insulated Gate Bias Transistors (IGBTs) for control are a huge step forward from the mercury vapor ignitrons that were used then. Technical details of this system were presented earlier in SAE paper 931799, Switched Linear Induction Motor Freeway System Data. This paper quantifies the costs for such a system.
