The vehicle's velocity is influenced by road grade, and this fluctuation induces unstable traffic state. This is one of the reason which make traffic jam, especially at expressway. Running test was carried out to investigate characteristics between grade and vehicle's velocity that is concerned with traffic behavior. As the result of calculating transfer functions for velocity error/grade from running test data, these transfer functions show that gains for velocity error/grade are flat and phases are delayed with frequency. Furthermore the transfer functions show that driver controls vehicle's velocity with not only velocity error but to detect the road grade
