A Turbocharger Bearing Dynamometer

This paper describes the design and commissioning of a bearing dynamometer to directly measure bearing losses. Attention is given to ensuring that oil supply lines do not cause constraint to the system and hence to losses measured. The importance of dynamometer accessories such as precise alignment and mounting facility and a calibrated torque gauge are addressed and the problems of thermal expansion are elucidated. Bearings of rolling element type and hydrodynamic type are investigated. The test procedure is compared with outer procedures used by previous workers and it is concluded that the present method affords an efficient and reliable means of assessing the losses for the full range of turbochargers.
