Abstract
This paper presents the findings of an experimental study to investigate the effect of pulley profile variations on belt misalignment noise performance. Pulleys were devised which featured various geometry modifications to the standard K-section V-ribbed belt profile. A series of tests were run to assess the impact on misalignment noise (“chirp”) using a single belt construction. Supplementary data on belt wear and belt stability is also provided. Results demonstrate pulley diameter to have a significant effect on noise and belt stability. Notable yet less substantial differences were observed as a result of K-section profile modifications. These findings provide accessory drive designers with additional insight into issues associated with improving the overall noise performance of the FEAD system.
