What is System Engineering? Its Utility in Innovation Processes

Abstract
System engineering was developed as a means of dealing with complex products and processes. It provides a conceptual and organizational framework for managing the design, development, manufacture, marketing, servicing and ultimate disposal of a system such as a passenger car. A theme of this paper is that it also promotes competitiveness by facilitating product innovations. It does this regardless of whether the innovation comes from market pull (customer needs and wants), technology push, stiffened safety requirements, or the practice of continuous improvement that has characterized the automotive industry since its inception.
