Cross-Wind Stability of Vehicles on Bridges

Abstract
MIRA has carried out a study, supported by wind tunnel tests, to
help identify vehicles which are particularly at risk of
overturning in cross-winds on exposed bridges. All the vehicles are
assumed to be unladen, thus having the lowest restoring moment to
counteract the aerodynamic overturning moment. The simplified
analysis excluded, however, any additional adverse effects due to
the suspension deflection of the vehicle, the gustiness of the
wind, and the driver's response.
It has been established that "Luton" type vans are
especially vulnerable to overturning. Of the other types
specifically covered in this study, drawbar- trailer combinations,
closely followed by articulated container vehicles and rigid
box-vans, would be the category of vehicles next most at risk
