Technology Management: Maximizing the Merger of Product and Process (The Relationship Between the Career Stages of Engineers and Scientists and Innovation in Research and Development Units)

Abstract
This study examined what relationship might exist between career stages of engineers and scientists and innovation in research and development units (R&D). Data were collected by surveys, selected on-site interviews and organizational records from ten R&D units in the automotive and computer industries, crossing personnel in three job levels: Vice presidents, senior managers, and engineers/scientists. The overall findings suggested that the more advanced the career stage of the professional, the higher the incidence of perceived and actual innovation. The data also suggested organizational policies and practices that foster professional career development and innovation.
