Abstract
Process waste and packaging waste in the automobile manufacturing industry are prime targets for waste reduction and recycling, as are office waste and other minor waste streams. Facility personnel in key positions to implement solid waste reduction and recycling-environmental engineers, packaging engineers, facility managers, and others-often lack specific training in the complexities and possibilities of solid waste reduction and recycling.
Achieving effective, long-term waste reduction and recycling of solid waste materials requires developing and implementing a waste reduction strategy that is technically feasible, institutionally acceptable, and economically advantageous. Facilities must adopt a methodical planning process supported by high-level managerial commitment, education and training, and a willingness to improve the activities through evaluation and modifications.
This paper presents the range of solid waste reduction and recycling opportunities in manufacturing and assembly plants within the automotive industry, and identifies critical planning and design requirements to successfully realize these opportunities.
