The Use of a Graphical Modeling Environment for Real-Time Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulation of Automotive ABS Systems

Abstract
A 17 degree-of-freedom model of an automobile with an ABS controller has been implemented on a XANALOG real-time modeling and simulation system utilizing visual block diagram programming. The model is derived from one which was developed for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute.
The major thrust of this paper is to illustrate the effectiveness of a modern graphical modeling methodology in the development of automotive simulation models, and to highlight the advantages of a RISC-based real-time simulation system having inherent hardware-in-the-loop features. These advantages include: ease of use, powerful real-time model interaction, seamless integration of hardware controllers, high performance, portability, and multi-window graphics display.
