A Design Tool for Car and Motorcycle Mufflers

The design of mufflers for engine exhaust noise reduction is a very interesting and effective problem. To this end, a design tool is under development at the Energetics Institute of Perugia.
The aim of this program is to define a model able to compute the acoustical and fluid dynamics characteristics of mufflers, assigned their geometry and absorption material topology; it is hence possible to predict the transmission loss level LTL and the pressure drop caused by the muffler. The code operates on the principles of electrical analogy, so that the silencer elements are considered as their electrical analogues. The code is implemented on personal computer, with a CAD style users interface. The LTL trends obtained with the program have been compared with experimental trends for simple configuration mufflers; a good correlation was achieved.
