Improvement of Diesel Combustion Using Pilot Injection With High Pressure Fuel Injection

A pilot injection was tested in combination with high pressure injection. It was found that the NOx reduction is possible by considerable retard of injection timing, although the fuel consumption deteriorates excessively. In this case a different tendency can be seen, such that a higher swirl ratio or increased number of nozzle holes gives better performance and emissions. Further, the combination of pilot injection and high pressure injection reduces NOx and smoke simultaneously without worsening the fuel economy, compared with the combustion system which conformed to the Japanese regulation in 1983.
