Abstract
The potentiality of an electronically controlled unit injector for the combustion improvement of the high speed, small DI diesel engine was studied. The unit injector brings the gradually rising pattern of injection rate and maximum peak injection pressures of 170 MPa. These characteristics result in the significantly increased smoke limited power especially at low and medium speed ranges and improved NOx-particulate trade-off. However, NOx reduction was not enough. In order to solve this problem, the additional measures such as more flexible injection rate control, injection timing control independent from injection rate control will be required.
