Transportation products have long customer and supplier chains. The end-user's problems are often complex and intermediaries such as leasers are often involved. A heavy truck may also have critical items such as engine, transmission and axles supplied by different companies.
The problem is to establish effective communication along this chain to make key features of the product user-effective and reduce the time and cost burdens of creating new designs to help all parties become more competitive. The leaders in these approaches are the European aerospace industry who now have a record of several major projects conducted with world leader results.
The paper shows how the conflicting requirements of communication and co-operation have been reconciled with major reductions in introduction time and cost
