Abstract
The use of integrated DFM and quality techniques is key in the
pursuit of competitive business performance. In the application of
techniques it is particularly important to take a cross functional
and team based approach-usage in single specialist functions alone,
may not be satisfactory because of their narrow operational
view.
The benefits of simultaneous definition of product design and
its manufacturing requirements are clear. CAD and the use of common
data across computer-aided engineering analysis and computer
integrated DFM and quality techniques are important in reducing
time to market, minimizing costs and improving quality.
Therefore the direction of future developments in the area of
DFmA are focussed towards integration with quality techniques and
computer implementations, which take advantage of common databases
and the opportunities that exist in the product descriptions that
reside in the modelling systems used in Lucas and other
businesses.
