A Drive for Compressed Automobile Product Cycles

Analysis of the implications of fast automotive product-cycles revealed the need for major changes in most aspects of the business and its external interfaces. Practical enabling factors were identified and appropriate philosophies, methodologies and technologies evolved. These resulted, in a typical case, in the compression of the product cycle to 3 years with the human resource needs halved and a three-years productivity and quality gain. Further considerations suggested the need for an ever close integration of suppliers and dealers with the main operation, to yield ever faster responses, greater flexibility and ever lower costs.
