Abstract
Australia has a good record in safety and environmental control of motor vehicles, and has set out to have regulatory requirements in keeping with its needs. Vehicle safety and emission standards, in keeping with the automotive industry, have become increasingly international in nature since Australia first enforced such requirements in the 1960's.
It is of benefit to look at the progressive development of Australian requirements, the achievements, the approach to international harmonization, and some of the challenges for the future.
